Bradstreet heartily agreed, and soon enough, his own official account was adopted by Francis Parkman and other early historians.

In this first comprehensive analysis of Bradstreet's raid, Ian Macpherson McCulloch uses never-before-seen materials and a new interpretive approach to dispel many of the myths that have grown up around the operation. The result is a closely observed, deeply researched revisionist microhistory--the first unvarnished, balanced account of a critical moment in early American military history.

Examined within the context of campaign planning and the friction among commanders in the war's first three years, the raid looks markedly different than Bradstreet's heroic portrayal. The operation was carried out principally by American colonial soldiers, and McCulloch lets many of the provincial participants give voice to their own experiences. He consults little-known French documents that give Bradstreet's opponents' side of the story, as well as supporting material such as orders of battle, meteorological data, and overviews of captured ships. McCulloch also examines the riverine operational capability that Bradstreet put in place, a new water-borne style of combat that the British-American army would soon successfully deploy in the campaigns of Niagara (1759) and Montreal (1760).

McCulloch's history is the most detailed, thoroughgoing view of Bradstreet's raid ever produced.

Number of Pages: 252

Dimensions: 0.57 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: March 05, 2024

Report copyright infringement

by Joseph a. It pitted the great powers of Britain and France against each other on a continent which was a wilderness sparsely populated by primitive Indian tribes and colonists who were loyal to the antagonists according to their nation of origin. Everyone with an interest in this war has heard of Braddock's Campaign of 1755, which terminated on the Monongahela River. This was a catastrophic defeat for the British early in the conflict which illustrated undeniable truths and taught brutal lessons. The French and their native allies demonstrated they understood how warfare should be fought in the great woodlands, while the British Army and its commanders fatally misunderstood how different this war would be from one fought on European battlefields. Caught in ambush, General Edward Braddock was killed, his force severely defeated. Only some of the colonial militia loyal to the British present, which included George Washington, acquitted themselves capably and in a manner which, fortunately for the cause of the Crown, they maintained for the rest of the war. This book, in its lengthier original form, included several first-hand accounts by those who were present. These have been removed to focus on the author's excellent history of the historical events. The eye-witness material has been included in Leonaur's Narratives of the French and Indian War series. It gave rise to famous characters such as Robert Rogers of the Rangers who have found their way into literature and the cinema. Of course, the famous Hawkeye and the novel 'The Last of the Mohicans' which takes place within real historical events of the time has also become an American classic. Author Joseph Altsheler has taken this well loved subject for a series of novels of high adventure. In these six novels the chronology of the war, which of course includes many of its true life characters, is told through the adventures of its principal characters. Young Robert Lennox, the hunter Willet-also known as the Great Bear and his Indian companion Tayoga travel through intrigues, dangers, battles and many trials and setbacks as the story unfolds. Richards (Author)

The Black Watch-the 42nd Foot-are the senior highland regiment in the British Army. In 1757 it was engaged in the Seven Years War as it was fought in North America in the conflict that we term 'The French and Indian War'. They would face one of their most severe trials in combat as the British moved to dislodge the French Army from its strongly held and vital strategic stronghold at Fort Ticonderoga-or Carillon as it was known to the French. This already formidable defensive position was made even more daunting by a wide breastwork of fallen trees, their branches hewn into a tangle of deadly spears. The Black Watch threw themselves upon it with their famous broadswords in an attack that would go down in history and regimental legend. This book covers the build up to the fateful assault and the eventual fall of the fort and the campaigns beyond. Extensive biographical sketches and muster rolls of the companies of the regiment make it an essential tool for both those interested in the period and genealogists alike.

Number of Pages: 176

Dimensions: 0.41 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: July 18, 2007

the-1759-battle-of-quebec-the-history-and-legacy-of-britains-most-important-victory-of-the-french-indian-war-paperback
The 1759 Battle of Quebec: The History and Legacy of Britain's Most Important Victory of the French & Indian War - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Charles River (Author)

*Includes pictures *Explains the development of French and British colonies in the New World *Includes accounts of the fighting *Includes a bibliography for further fighting *Includes a table of contents "[W]e observed the Enemy marching down towards us in three Columns, at 10 they formed their Line of Battle, which was at least six deep, having their Flanks covered by a thick Wood on each Side, into which they threw above 3000 Canadians and Indians, who gauled us much; the Regulars then marched briskly up to us, and gave us their first Fire, at about Fifty Yards Distance, which we did not return, as it was General Wolfe's express Orders not to fire till they came within twenty Yards of us..." - The British Sergeant-Major of Gen. Hopson's Grenadiers On September 13, 1759, a battle was fought on the Plains of Abraham outside the old city of Québec that was one of the turning point battles in world history. Thanks to the British victory and the events that followed, Canada went from being a colony of France (New France) to being a colony of Great Britain, which permanently changed Canadian history. In many ways, the outcome of the battle brought about several American attempts to seize Canada during the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and ultimately it ensured that when Canada became an independent country, it was part of the British Commonwealth with an Anglophone majority and a Francophone minority. Frictions over cultural and political issues between the English Canadians and the Québécois, dating back to the battle, continue to impact the state of affairs in Canada today. While the battle had a profound impact, it has also been romanticized and mythologized beyond even epic proportions. Though often forgotten today (more than 250 years after the battle), the Battle of the Plains of Abraham was the culmination of a long siege, and the decisive action itself was an incredibly short affair at less than half an hour. Despite that brevity, both commanding generals were mortally wounded in the exchange, making British General James Wolfe a national hero on both sides of the Atlantic and French General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm a convenient scapegoat. Only a few thousand soldiers were engaged on each side, and the battle ended with less than 1,500 casualties combined. Regardless, the French were compelled to quit Quebec after the battle, giving up one of their most important colonial possessions in the New World, and when the fighting ended in North America in 1760, the British still held the city. When the Seven Years War ended on the European continent, the subsequent treaty forced the French to cede most of their North American possessions to the British, and it also left Britain in tough economic straits, which would set about a chain of events that brought about the American Revolution in the following decade. The 1759 Battle of Quebec: The History and Legacy of Britain's Most Important Victory of the French & Indian War looks at the campaign that culminated with the pivotal battle of the French & Indian War. When the Seven Years War broke out Amherst found himself in Europe in 1757 in command of Hessians fighting at Hastenbeck. In North America, which became the main stage for this period of his career, he participated in all the principal conflicts that took place during the 18th century: the French and Indian War (the Seven Years War), Pontiac's (the Ohio Indian) War to deprive Bourbon France of its American holdings and the American Revolution (the American War of Independence). This unique Leonaur edition concludes with an erudite and thorough analysis of the Siege of Louisburg, a notable victory for the British commanded by Amherst, written by the military historian, Macdonald. Includes for the first time illustrations and photographs not previously included with the text.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 260

Dimensions: 0.75 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: February 07, 2022
