A once-mighty empire has finally come crashing down--and a mysterious young woman, unable to speak, has turned up on the streets. A doctor appeals to the public for information about her past and receives a single response, from a sanatorium patient who claims to be her father. The man reveals only her name: Gretel. But he encloses a bedtime story he asks the doctor to read aloud to her, about an Architect whose radically modern creation has caused a great scandal. The next day a second story arrives, about a Ballet Master who develops a new position of the feet. Twenty-four more stories follow in alphabetical order, about an Immunologist and a Jeweler, a Revolutionary and a Satirist, a Waif and an X-ray Technician and a Zionist. Crossing paths and purposes, their stories interweave until a single picture emerges, that of a decadent, death-obsessed, oversexed empire buzzing with the ideas of Freud and Karl Kraus. There are artists who ape the innocence of children, and scientists who insist that children are anything but innocent . . . And then there's Gretel's own mother, who will do whatever it takes to sing onstage at the City Theater. Is it any wonder that this world--soon to vanish anyway in a war to end all wars--was one from which Gretel's father wished to shelter her?
Author Biography

Adam Ehrlich Sachs is the author of three books: Gretel and the Great War, The Organs of Sense, and Inherited Disorders. Alexander Powell (Author)

The opening shots of a great conflict

The German plan of attack in 1914 involved a giant 'hooking' movement commencing within Germany itself and then advancing through Luxembourg and neutral Belgium towards the Continental channel ports before arcing south-east to embrace the French heartland. France would be taken from the rear of Verdun on the River Meuse to Orleans on the Loire. Paris-caught squarely in the middle of this giant sweep-would be literally enveloped. History shows that the plan did not go the way the Germans intended and their advance, stopped by the French and the B. E. F, meant the war became stalemate of trenches, wire and mud, a war of attrition that led to the eventual defeat of Germany. Initially, however, it seemed as though nothing could prevent the advance of the vast juggernaut of that was the German army. The first stages of the Great War went very much according to plan and the first nation casualty was Belgium. The war quite literally rolled over this small nation and students of the conflict have tended to overlook these important events as a tiny nation fought to defend itself against hopeless odds. The author of this book was an American journalist who was present in Europe at the time these events were taking place, he saw the campaign unfold with his own eyes and has recorded what he saw for posterity. This is an interesting book, about the outbreak of hostilities to the arrival on the field of battle of the British Army, told from an unusual perspective.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 180

Dimensions: 0.56 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: December 12, 2012

Report copyright infringement

by Iric Nathanson (Author)

When the United States made a formal declaration of war on April 6, 1917, Minnesotans answered the call to arms. E. B. Du Bois, believing in the possibility of full citizenship and democratic change, encouraged African Americans to "close ranks" and support the Allied cause in World War I, he made a decision that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Seeking both intellectual clarity and personal atonement, for more than two decades Du Bois attempted to write the definitive history of Black participation in World War I. His book, however, would never be finished. In The Wounded World, Chad L. Williams tells the dramatic story of Du Bois's failed efforts to complete what would have been one of his most significant works. The surprising account of this unpublished book lends new insight into Du Bois's struggles to reckon with both the history and the troubling memory of the war, along with the broader meanings of race and democracy for Black people in the twentieth century.

Drawing on a wide range of sources, most notably Du Bois's unpublished manuscript and research materials, Williams tells a sweeping story of hope, betrayal, disillusionment, and transformation, setting into motion a fresh understanding of the life and mind of arguably the most important scholar-activist in African American history. People can find examples of his renown in American pop fiction. For example, Snoopy from the popular comics often flies his doghouse and attempts to shoot down the noble red baron, Manfred Von Richthofen. Of course, true to form, Snoopy's aero-doghouse adventures always ended in disaster for the flying dog ace, and the red Baron always flew away triumphantly. In truth, none of the Red Knight's victims ever flew away again. They either found their end in flames, or riddled with bullets, or smashed impacting the earth, or taken as a prisoner of war. This book offers some unique insights into the baron's life and one can see through letters to his mother and visits with his father (who held the rank of Major in the German army) what made the man tick. German life in the early 1900s was one of glory forged in war. It was an honor to die for one's country, and parents were proud to sacrifice their youth to defend their way of life.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy short books, or are interested in WWI, or people interested in German history, or those who like war books, or those who have interests in antiquated flying machines. Always afterwards he wore a distinctive white patch on his left eye. He was given France's greatest honor, the Croix de Guerre with palm, for his valor on the field of battle. ...

(Wikipedia.og)

Number of Pages: 282

Dimensions: 0.7 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: March 11, 2024

Report copyright infringement

by Philip Gibbs (Author)

"In this book I have written about some aspects of the war which, I believe, the world must know and remember, not only as a memorial of men's courage in tragic years, but as a warning of what will happen again-surely-if a heritage of evil and of folly is not cut out of the hearts of peoples. Here it is the reality of modern warfare not only as it appears to British soldiers, of whom I can tell, but to soldiers on all the fronts where conditions were the same." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. The injustice and reported brutality of these offensives outraged people all over the world whether their own countries were initially drawn into the conflict or not. Many young Americans felt compelled to join the fight out of principle or for adventure, and so volunteered to join the French Foreign Legion. Some of them eventually became famous as aviators in the Lafayette Escadrille and other squadrons, but others fought their war in the mud of the trenches as infantry soldiers. This book concerns the experiences of two of these young men. David Wooster King's story takes the reader through the most brutal fighting on the Western Front, where the Legion was regularly first into the most lethal part of the fray. Astonishingly and against the odds, the author survived to write this compelling personal account of his experiences. Among King's comrades was the poet Alan Seeger, renowned for the war poem 'I Have a Rendezvous With Death', among others. The second part of this book consists of Seeger's letters describing his own war until the time of his death in action. This excellent book of the war two Americans knew, fighting for the French Foreign Legion, has been enhanced in this Leonaur edition, by the inclusion of images not present in the original publications.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 256

Dimensions: 0.58 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: April 18, 2017

Flattop: Stories From the History of the Aircraft Carrier in World War I and World War II - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Lenny Flank (Author)

Today, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is a symbol of national might, able to project naval air power around the globe. Yet thanks to recent advances in the field emphasizing transoceanic networks and cultural encounters, it is now possible to develop a more nuanced understanding of the history of Germans in the Pacific. Wauchope (Editor)

The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), 42nd/73rd Foot, entered the Great War with two Regular, one Special Reserve (the 3rd) and four Territorial Force battalions (4th to 7th); by the end of the war the total had grown to twenty-two battalions (Becke), twenty-five according to the History's Foreword. Thirty thousand served in the Regiment in France, Belgium Salonika, Palestine and Mesopotamia and of these 8,390 died. The Regiment was awarded 69 Battle Honours, three VCs were won and a fourth was awarded to a BW officer in 1917 while he was commanding 1st Lincolns. This three-volume history is outstanding - Vol 1 deals with the Regular and the Special Reserve battalions, Vol 2 the TF battalions and Vol 3 the New Army (Service or Kitchener) battalions. Common to all three volumes are the Preface, Foreword (by the Colonel of the Regiment) and the page listing the Regiment's Battle Honours. In each volume the battalions are treated separately and for all the front line battalions, following the narrative describing their war service there are the same six appendices: Record of Officers' Service, Summary of Casualties, Officer casualty list, Other Rank casualty list, Honours and Awards and finally the list of Actions and Operations. In Volume 1 there is a seventh appendix to the 1st and 2nd Battalion narratives - a list of Other Ranks of each battalion who were commissioned during the war. In the case of the TF the second and third line battalions, which did not leave the UK, all are dealt with together. There is a bonus in Volume 2; at the end there is a section on the Royal Highlanders of Canada represented by the 13th, 42nd and 73rd Canadian Infantry Battalions, giving a brief account of their actions with appendices showing for each battalion a summary of killed, list of Honours and Awards and list of Actions and Operations. Many books have studied history's great commanders and the art of command. None have focused exclusively on the chief of staff --that key staff officer responsible for translating the ideas of the commander into practical plans that common soldiers can execute successfully on the battlefield. In some cases, it is almost impossible to think of certain great commanders without also thinking of their chief of staff. Napoleon's chief of staff Berthier and Eisenhower's chief of staff Bedell Smith are two examples that are profiled in this work. Zabecki and his collaborators examine the history, development, and role of the chief of staff primarily through profiles of the most important practitioners of the art. The Germans had refined the submarine and the U-Boat menace represented a severe threat for the sea-borne transportation of men and materiel across the Atlantic Ocean. Clearly counter-measures were required and among several suggested and adopted was the creation of a 'mosquito fleet' of small fast moving motor launches focussed on harbour defence and patrolling comparatively coastal waters, armed with quick firing guns and able to speed at 19 knots. In April 1915 work began on fifty 75ft motor launches fitted with 2200 HP engines. The days of the 'submarine chasers', of the RNVR had arrived. 'Motor Launch Patrol' is a creatively written book by a motor launch officer which combines his first hand experiences on patrol, his reveries and anecdotes, the everyday workings of the 'mosquito fleet' and its notable battles and services. The role the little boats played in the daring Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids is well covered as is perilous duty at Dunkirk and off the Belgian coast. The activities of the M.L.'s in the Mediterranean Sea off the coasts of Turkey and Palestine is also covered in some detail. The second piece in this book is an extract from, 'The Cinderellas of the Fleet' which provides an overview of the launches in Royal Navy service from design to manufacture and their time in action.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 232

Dimensions: 0.53 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: June 20, 2023

east-africa-volume-1-august-1914-september-1916-official-history-of-the-great-war-other-theatres-paperback
EAST AFRICA VOLUME 1 August 1914-September 1916: Official History of the Great War Other Theatres - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Lt-Colonel Charles Hordern (Author)

The first (and only) published volume on the frustrating early Allied campaign in East Africa, that saw the emergence of Germany's Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck - one of the most successful and legendary guerilla leaders of all time.

This volume in the Official History of The Great War covers the first half of the campaign in East Africa (the planned second volume was never published). The fighting in 'German East' - the German colony comprising the modern state of Tanzania - became one of the most famous guerilla wars in history, and the tenacious and cunning German commander, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, won the respect of his enemies for the clever way he resisted all attempts to subdue his tiny force of European officers and highly trained native 'Askaris'. But, despite Lettow-Vorbeck's fame, the Allied side of the war - involving international forces from South Africa and India as well as Britain, is virtually unknown. Of all the subsidiary enterprises undertaken during The Great War, the operations described in this volume are probably the least known. The only regular British battalion involved was the 2nd Loyal N. Lancs. The early stages were disastrous for the British, beginning with the unsuccessful attack from the sea on the port of Tanga, described as "one of the most notable failures in British military history." The British commander was replaced and ordered home, while on the German side Tanga proved the first of many victories for the commander who would earn the admiration of friend and foe alike and remain undefeated right through the war: von Lettow-Vorbeck.

Number of Pages: 722

Dimensions: 1.44 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: September 25, 2023

Report copyright infringement

by Judith Devlin (Editor), John Paul Newman (Editor), Maria Falina (Editor)

In the English language World War I has largely been analysed and understood through the lens of the Western Front. This book addresses this imbalance by examining the war in Eastern and Central Europe. The historiography of the war in the West has increasingly focused on the experience of ordinary soldiers and civilians, the relationships between them and the impact of war at the time and subsequently. This book takes up these themes and, engaging with the approaches and conclusions of historians of the Western front, examines wartime experiences and the memory of war in the East. Analysing soldiers' letters and diaries to discover the nature and impact of displacement and refugee status on memory, this volume offers a basis for comparison between experiences in these two areas. It also provides material for intra-regional comparisons that are still missing from the current research. Was the war in the East wholly 'other'? Were soldiers in this region as alienated as those in the West? Did they see themselves as citizens and was there continuity between their pre-war or civilian and military identities? And if, in the Eastern context, these identities were fundamentally challenged, was it the experience of war itself or its consequences (in the shape of imprisonment and displacement, and changing borders) that mattered most? How did soldiers and citizens in this region experience and react to the traumas and upheavals of war and with what consequences for the post-war era? In seeking to answer these questions and others, this volume significantly adds to our understanding of World War I as experienced in Central and Eastern Europe.

Author Biography

Judith Devlin is Senior Lecturer in History at University College Dublin. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Number of Pages: 538

Dimensions: 1.09 x 11.69 x 8.27 IN

Publication Date: July 25, 2015

the-first-heroes-the-extraordinary-story-of-the-doolittle-raid-americas-first-world-war-ii-vict-ory-paperback
The First Heroes: The Extraordinary Story of the Doolittle Raid--America's First World War II Vict ory - Paperback

Report copyright infringement

by Craig Nelson (Author)

Immediately after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Predictably, as in many commander's memoirs it displays much partiality as to his own actions and those of others. This is particularly noteworthy since the consensus view of the history of the time does not judge-with much justification-French kindly. At the outbreak of the war French was the obvious choice for command and his views accorded with the government establishment if not with more forward thinking military men under his command. Fast moving German offensives revealed French's military strategy with its faith in inflexible defensive strongpoints to be hopelessly out of date. Events overtook him and were it not for Smith-Dorrien's aggressive action during the First Battle of Mons-for which seemingly French never forgave him-the BEF could easily have been overwhelmed. French became increasing out of touch and indecisive and was replaced in 1915 by Haig. This book is far from a balanced history, but is an important account of how a nineteenth century soldier saw his twentieth century war. It also contains much factual information on the dispositions of troops and actions in what was a fluid stage of the conflict.

Number of Pages: 312

Dimensions: 0.81 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: March 10, 2009

guns-at-le-cateau-two-accounts-of-the-b-e-f-in-the-first-world-war-the-royal-regiment-of-artillery-at-le-cateau-26-august-1914-by-a-paperback
Guns at Le Cateau: Two Accounts of the B. By contrast the small standing army of Great Britain languished in its garrisons. When war broke out the B. E. F was hastened to the continent in little more than a week. That the British were not annihilated in the first days of conflict demonstrates the quality of every aspect of the British Army, which many at that time believed to be the best army-man for man-in the world. However, no force of its size could stop the inexorable advance of the enemy, German superiority in numbers began to tell and the retreat from Mons was ordered. By the 25th of August the First German Army was so hard on the heels of the British II Corps that, despite orders to the contrary, Smith-Dorrien, the corps commander, realising that he could not rely on support while his corps retreated, defied Sir John French and ordered his men to stand and fight at Le Cateau, east of Cambrai. There the British fired shrapnel shells into the advancing Germans, inflicting and sustaining terrible casualties, but ensuring that the B. E. F would exist to fight another day. Angry at the time, Sir John French later freely acknowledged that Smith-Dorrien's action had saved the army from destruction. Published to coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, this unique Leonaur book contains two accounts of the fighting at Le Cateau, an iconic example of the British Army performing at its very best.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 164

Dimensions: 0.38 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Illustrated: Yes

Publication Date: December 11, 2013

Dive! It deals with submarines in action in the various theatres of the war from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Submarine v submarine operations and depth charging are described and anecdotes of submarine actions throughout the conflict feature prominently. Domville-Fife's book perfectly partners Wheeler's work by providing detailed descriptions of the submarines of six warring nations, together with technical details of torpedoes and mines. German officials and secret-service operatives plotted to bring war to the United States through an array of schemes and strategies, from training a German-Mexican army for a cross-border invasion, to dispatching saboteurs to disrupt American industry, and planning for submarine bases on the western coast of Mexico.

Bill Mills tells the true story of the most audacious of these operations: the German plot to launch clandestine sea raiders from the Mexican port of Mazatlán to disrupt Allied merchant shipping in the Pacific. The scheme led to a desperate struggle between German and American secret agents in Mexico. German consul Fritz Unger, the director of a powerful trading house, plotted to obtain a salvaged Mexican gunboat to supply U-boats operating off Mexico and to seize a hapless tramp schooner to help hunt Allied merchantmen.

Unger's efforts were opposed by a colorful array of individuals, including a trusted member of the German secret service in Mexico who was also the top American spy, the U.S. State Department's senior officer in Mazatlán, the hard-charging commander of a navy gunboat, and a draft-dodging American informant in the enemy camp. A. N. Ys-first anywhere!

The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry was a female organisation formed in 1907. Its aim was not only to provide competent first aid on the battlefield put also to train its members to effectively operate and live independently and be able to transport the wounded to field hospitals. So F. A. N. Y nurses were skilled drivers or horsewomen and were often more than usually skilled in outdoor pursuits-such as camping-something that differentiated them from normal nursing staff. When the First World War began the organisation immediately volunteered itself for service on the continent, but was initially rebuffed by the British military establishment who, in the spirit of the times, believed a woman's place was at home and not at war. However, the Belgian and French authorities welcomed them with enthusiasm and the F. A. N. Ys became essential to allied servicemen both as medical carers and as ambulance drivers. Before long the resourceful women of the organisation, as well as providing their first aid and ambulance services, were running hospitals, soup kitchens and canteens and couriering food and clothing to the front lines. By 1915 the British army command came to recognise the value of these indomitable woman and began to work more closely with the organisation and by 1916 F. A. N. Ys were working in the field as mechanics. Old prejudices had been broken down as a matter of necessity and there can be little doubt that the activities of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry-and similar women's organisations-them did much to erode prejudices and contribute towards the cause of women's suffrage. This special Leonaur edition, released to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, combines two remarkable books for reader interest and good value. F. Altman (Author)

In a 1934 speech, marking the Twenty-fifth Reunion of his high school class, Martin Heidegger spoke eloquently of classmates killed in the Great War and called on his audience to recognize that the national rebirth now occuring in Hitler's Germany must continue to draw inspiration from the war dead. In this process, he refers to the war of 1914-1918 as "the First World War." Since the condition for the possibility of "the First" is a Second World War, Martin Heidegger and the First World War raises the question: how could Heidegger have already known in 1934 that another war was coming? The answer is to be found by reading Being and Time (1927) as a funeral oration for the warriors of the Great War, a reading that validates Heidegger's paradoxical claim that the genuinely historical must emerge from the future. By using Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" as an archetype of the genre, William H. F. Altman shows that Heidegger's concept of temporality in Being and Time replicates the way past, present, and future interweave in the classic funeral oration and argues that if there is a visible path connecting Being and Time to its author's subsequent decision for National Socialism, it runs through the trenches of the Great War and its author's successful attempt to evade them. The analysis and conclusions in this book will be of great value to students and scholars interested in philosophy, history, intellectual history, German studies, and political science.

Author Biography

William H. As a military institution that valued physical, mental, and moral strength, the Marines created an alluring image for young men seeking a rite of passage into manhood. Within this context, the potential for danger and death only enhanced the appeal.

Mark Ryland Folse's The Globe and Anchor Men offers the first in-depth history of masculinity in the Marine Corps during the World War I era. White manhood and manliness constituted the lens through which the Marines of this period saw themselves, how they wanted the public to see them, and what they believed they contributed to society. Their highly gendered culture helped foster positive public relations, allowing Marines to successfully promote the potential benefits of becoming a Marine over the costs, even in times of war.

By examining how the Marine Corps' culture, public image, and esteem within U.S. society evolved, Folse demonstrates that the American people measured the Marines' usefulness not only in terms of military readiness but also according to standards of manliness set by popular culture and by Marines themselves. The Marines claimed to recruit the finest specimens of American manhood and make them even better: strong, brave, and morally upright. They claimed the Marine would be a man with a wealth of travel and experience behind him. He would be a proud and worthy citizen who had earned respect through his years of service, training, and struggle in the Marine Corps. Becoming a Marine benefited the man, and the new Marine benefited the nation. Stuart (Author)

The English historian Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was the first Catholic Studies professor at Harvard University and has been described as one of the foremost Catholic thinkers of modern times. His focus on culture prefigured its importance in Catholicism since Vatican Council II and in the rise of mainstream cultural history in the late twentieth century. How did Dawson think about culture and why does it matter? Joseph T. Stuart argues that through Dawson's study of world cultures, he acquired a "cultural mind" by which he attempted to integrate knowledge according to four implicit rules: intellectual architecture, boundary thinking, intellectual asceticism, and intellectual bridges. Dawson's multilayered approach to culture, instantiating John Henry Newman's philosophical habit of mind, is key to his work and its relevance. By it, he responded to the cultural fragmentation he sensed after the Great War (1914-1918).

Stuart supports these claims by demonstrating how Dawson formed his cultural mind practicing an interdisciplinary science of culture involving anthropology, sociology, history, and comparative religion. Stuart shows how Dawson applied his cultural thinking to problems in politics and education.

This book establishes how Dawson's simple definition of culture as a "common way of life" reconciles intellectualist and behavioral approaches to culture. In addition, Dawson's cultural mind provides a synthesis helpful for recognizing the importance of Christian culture in education. It demonstrates principles which construct a more meaningful cultural history. Anyone interested in the idea of culture, the connection of religion to the social sciences, Catholic Studies, or Dawson studies will find this book an engaging and insightful intellectual history.

Number of Pages: 448

Dimensions: 1.5 x 8.9 x 5.98 IN

Publication Date: June 09, 2022

Report copyright infringement

by Michael P. The narrative begins in 1871, following Prussia's triumph over France, which led to the unification of Germany. This birth of a new nation-state in Europe's heartland, boasting remarkable industrial and human potential, is meticulously detailed. At the helm of this emerging power was Otto von Bismarck, the Iron Chancellor, who skillfully navigated a complex treaty system to maintain peace and foster internal development.

However, the book also delves into the post-Bismarck era, where German statesmen struggled to replicate his adeptness in foreign affairs. The narrative takes a dramatic turn with the ascension of Kaiser Wilhelm II, whose new direction for German foreign policy was marked by colonial and military expansion. This period is characterized by the Kaiser's unpredictable and prideful demeanor, using foreign policy as a tool to manipulate other nations.

As Germany was increasingly viewed as a threat to the European order, its alliance with the unstable Austria-Hungary led it into a devastating war in August 1914. The book provides a detailed account of World War I, a brutal conflict where outdated tactics were pitted against modern, powerful weaponry. Stewart (Author)

Personal recollections of a little reported unit of the British Army

This book is one of many first-hand accounts written by soldiers about their experiences in the First World War. Originally titled 'From Mons to Loos' this gives readers little specific indication of the book's contents. It of course concerns the period from the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, when the 'contemptible' little British Army fought its historic, dogged retreat from Mons, through the epic battles of the Marne and Aisne and First Ypres to the Battle of Loos in 1915. By this time the Western Front had become a stalemate of opposing trenches. However, what the original title doesn't tell us, is that the book specifically concerns the activities of the Army Service Corps (later the RASC) whose task it was, using horse drawn transport, road and rail, to deliver everything the men in the firing line needed-from bullets to bread. The ASC's talent for the task led to the affectionate nickname which likened them to a well known cartoon character of the period. This astonishing account-told by one of its officers-of the war 'fought' by those British soldiers in Belgium and France who rarely, if ever, pulled a trigger, but who were nevertheless constantly at risk from enemy fire. They were a largely unsung body of men, lacking nothing in courage or dedication to their task, who often gave their lives in the service of their comrades of the fighting regiments and without whom the war would have been impossible to fight. Very few accounts of the ASC exist and Stewart's book, by virtue of the obscurity of its original title, has been largely overlooked in bibliographies of books about the corps.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Number of Pages: 168

Dimensions: 0.5 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: November 14, 2015

Report copyright infringement

by Michael Paris (Editor)

The Great War played an instrumental role in the development of cinema, so necessary was it to the mobilization efforts of the combatant nations. Through a comparative approach, essays by contributors from Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States enrich our understanding of cinematic depictions of the Great War in particular and combat in general. New historical research on both the uses of propaganda and the development of national cinemas make this collection one of the first to show the ways in which film history can contribute to our study of national histories. The contributors to the volume monitor popular perceptions of the war, the reshaping of the war's legacy, and the evolution of cinematic clichés that are perpetuated in filmmaking through the century. Some of the films they discuss are All Quiet on the Western Front, Gallipoli, The Grand Illusion, The Big Parade, Battle of the Somme, J'Accuse, Regeneration, and many more. It is therefore often difficult for the military historian of later times to achieve a complete understanding of the position on both sides of an engagement. Sources from the losing side tend to be in shorter supply than those on the winning side. There is now much interest in the opening campaign of the First World War, not least because the outstanding defensive performance of the hugely outnumbered 'Contemptible Little Army' is particularly appealing to the sentiments of English speaking people and has entered the annals of great military achievements. Also all students of the period know that the war shortly became a stalemate, a war of attrition with barbed-wire, trenches, mud and blood that abided until the last phase of the war. This was the fluid stage of the war, when experienced county infantry regiments and cavalry fought in the way that colonial experiences had trained them to fight. So this book, written by a member of the German staff is especially interesting and vital for all students of the period. It is, as one would expect, partisan in its perspective, and reveals how the campaign of 1914 was perceived by the advancing German force. It provides much detail of how the Germans saw the actions of the B. E. F and this will be a revelation to many readers. The English editor has included very useful passages of explanation and verification which compare the German view with what history has shown were the actual facts. Numerous footnotes correct the German view of the size and disposition of enemy units, the numbers of troops engaged and the ordnance the British and their French allies had at their disposal. Verification of actual Allied positions held, resources in reserve etc. are also given to counterbalance the German view.
